The world spends nearly 2% of the GDP on R&D
According to UNESCO estimates, the world spent 1.7% of the GDP on research and development in 2007.
From 2002 to 2007, world R&D expenditure increased by 44%, from an estimated 788.5 billion PPP$ to 1137.9 billion PPP$.
The Americas accounted for 37.6%, Asia 32.7% and Europe 27.3% of world R&D expenditure. Countries of the European Union, the United States and Japan account for nearly 70% of global R&D expenditure.
