Literates in India
Literacy is a core developmental issue in India.
Since 1951, there has been nearly 4 times increase in number of literates per 1000 persons from a low of 167 to 648. The improvement is significant for females.
However, India’s education infrastructure and services has been unable cope with the demands of an increasing population.
