The Inter-American Court of Human Rights was established in 1979, and its objective was to apply and interpret the American Convention on Human Rights and other treaties concerning Human Rights. The Court does not have compulsory jurisdiction though and only 22 (63%) members of the Organization of American States have so far accepted it. This PPT displays the states with the highest number of violation judgments before the Court up to December 31, 2008. These figures include judgments where the state accepted responsibility subsequent to the cases referral to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
The PPT graph shows the violations that the court had declared out of the judgments that were heard in the court of Law. Peru tops the list of the offenders amongst all the judgments that were heard for all the states. Guatemala and Columbia follows the list with 12 and 10 violations respectively. Nicaragua had the lowest number of violations out of the judgments delivered. Only Honduras had a judgment till date where no violation was found.
