India’s tops in agricultural water demand, needs efficiency improvements
Water is becoming a scarce resource. Rising population, pollution, over consumption and poor water management strategies by countries have led to depletion and destruction of water resource basins across the world.
According to a report (2030 Water Resources Group), the ‘business as usual approach’ will not help in sorting out the global water crisis. Demand projections for India and sub Saharan Africa indicate that agriculture will continue to be major component of their total water demand. At a comparative level, China will draw less for agriculture and more for industry. By 2030, it is projected that agriculture will contribute only 4% to China’s GDP and for India the percentage contribution of agriculture to GDP would be about 10%. Municipal and domestic water demand will grow across all regions.
