Sanchi Stupa, Madhya Pradesh
Date of Completion: 3rd Century B.C.
Stupas are large hemispherical domes containing a central chamber in which the relics of the Buddha were placed. The Great Stupa of Sanchi is located 46 km north east of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It was initially commissioned by Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century B.C. The structure is 120 feet across and is 54 feet high. The Stupa is an excellent example of Buddhist architecture.
