The Charminar, Hyderabad

The best know edifice in Hyderabad, the Charminar, meaning ‘four pillars, is a square structure comprising of four minarets which rise to a height of 48.7m above the ground. It also houses a mosque and 45 prayer spaces. This exquisite monument was built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad. Granite and lime-mortar were chiefly used for its construction. The Charminar is an example of the Cazia style of architecture. In 1824 this monument was replastered at a cost of INR 100,000.
