Qutb Minar, New Delhi
Year of Completion: 1199
A few kilometers south of Delhi stands India’s best-known minaret – The Qutb Minar. Built in red and buff sandstone, the monument rises to an imposing height of 72.5 metres. Several inscriptions on the minaret in Arabic indicate its history. The tower was erected in 1199 by Qutbu’d-Din Aibak and three more stories were added to it by his successor, Shamsu’d –Din Iltutmish (AD 1211 – 1236). The Qutb Minar was declared a World Heritage Monument in 1993.
