Hawa Mahal, Jaipur, Rajasthan
Year of Completion: 1799

The Hawa Mahal or Palace of Winds was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The structure consists of five stories and was constructed using red and pink sandstone and resembles a giant honeycomb. The side of the building which faces the main street has 953 small windows. The air circulating through these windows keeps the entire building cool even in hot weather. The original purpose of the Hawa Mahal was to enable the royal women of the palace to watch everyday life in the street below without being observed. This historical building incorporates the Rajput style of architecture.
