Cellular Jail, Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar
Year of Completion: 1906
During India’s struggle for independence, many prominent Indian activists were lodged in this remote prison situated in the Indian Ocean. The construction of the prison took a decade and the bricks used in its erection were brought from Myanmar. The prison derives its name from the 698 cells it contains. Each inmate was housed in a separate cell and was prevented from communicating with other inmates.
