ePublishing Products Available in India

The ePublishing industry’s electronic offering in the Indian market consists of eBooks, eJournals, eNewspapers, Audio books, CD ROMs & DVDs, e-Zines and eCoursewares.

  • eBooks are digital versions of the printed hardcopy form and delivered and sold in the electronic form. The product is usually cheaper than the print version and facilitates direct download from the internet, speedier circulation and convenient storage.
  • eJournals similar to eBooks are the electronic version of publications which can cover and cater to virtually any industry, be it medical, scientific, finance or construction. The first eJournal appeared in the late 1990s and since then, they have been increasing in numbers.
  • eNewspapers are the online versions of the printed paper formats, usually in the same layout as the latter. Although printed newspapers are the main revenue generators, many established newspaper publications such as the Times group and even upcoming publications have their online versions, which serve to increase readership and acceptance in the minds of the reader/viewer.
  • Audio books has an add on speech option which can be listened to and is embedded in the regular text. This category is still in its initiation stages.
  • CD ROMS and DVDs falls under the category of offline publishing where the digital content is distributed in the form of CDs and DVDs.
  • eZines are comparable to online newspapers, but are published by print magazine publishers. The market for eZines is still lower than its print version.
  • eCourseware and eManuals especially with the help of CAD technology is fast evolving as a sought after form of electronic content.
