Electricity in India – Hydro-electric Power Plants in India

Hydro-Electric Power plants are the most widely used renewable source of energy for electricity generation in India. In fact about 57% of the total installed capacity in renewable energy happens to be from Hydro-electric power plants. While hydro-electric power projects are spread out geographically over most of the major rivers, the concentration is more towards the Southern part of India. The major reason for this is the lack of coal deposits in the Southern region. With the Eastern part of India facing power shortages due to low installed capacity, a number of hydroelectric power plants are also scheduled to be commissioned in this part of India.

The Advantages of Hydro-electric Power Generation:-

  • It is a clean and renewable source of energy.
  • The reservoirs created to store the water also serve the purpose of storing water for other usages, both domestic and commercial.
  • It has the ability to be setup at remote locations without the requirement of regular link up to roads or railways for fuel transport.

The Disadvantages of Hydro-electric Power Generation:-

  • The rivers in India are dependent on the monsoons. Any failure in the seasonal monsoons affects the level of water available in the reservoir and subsequently the power that can be generated.
  • The reservoirs that are built, flood nearby areas causing ecological changes and massive relocation in many cases.
  • Global Warming is seen to affect the river flows and this may affect the productivity of the power plant in the near future.
  • The gestation period for a hydro-electric power plant to be setup is large. It takes twice as long to build as compared to a thermal power plant.
  • The cost is also 3 times higher than setting a thermal power plant.

The major hydroelectric projects are Koyna in Maharashtra, Sharavati in Karnataka and  Dehar in Rajasthan
